Abstract

The research was related to the relationship between foliar application of urea and the herb yield and content as well as the chemical composition of the essential oil. Lemon balm was cultivated in an unheated plastic tunnel. The foliar application of nitrogen was used by spraying the plants with 0.5% urea solution on 11, 18 and 25 June. The lemon balm herb was dried in a dryer at 35°C. The weight of air-dried herb and leaves and the content and chemical composition of essential oil in the leaves (GC-MS/MS) were determined. The results showed no significant effect of nitrogen on the yield of air-dried herb and leaves of lemon balm and essential oil content. The major components of the studied oil were geranial and neral. Foliar application of nitrogen contributed to the increase in the concentration of neral and caryophyllene oxide and a reduction of the amounts of p-cymene, citronellal, geranial and E-caryophyllene, also modifying the content of the remaining oil components.
