Effect of plant density on the quantity and quality of carrots grown on ridges

Abstract

The effects of plant density (25, 50, 75, 100 plants ∙ m–2) on the quality and quantity of carrot yield were studied in a field experiment. The total and marketable yields, including the yield of marketable roots with the diameter 30–60 mm progressively increased with the plant density. With two rows on a ridge a higher total but not marketable yield was harvested. The yield of small roots (<20 mm) increased with the plant density, but the latter did not influence the yields of bifurcated, rotted and split roots or those damaged by pests. The yields of nonmarketable, bifurcated and small roots were the highest with two rows on a ridge. The mean root weight was progressively decreased with increasing the plant density, but the number of rows on a ridge had no effect. The length of roots and the yield of leaves were not affected by plant density and row arrangement on the ridge.
