Effect of pruning intensity on the growth and yield of highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L.) ‛Bluecrop’

Abstract

In the years 2004–2006 a study was conducted on the effects of pruning on the growth and yield of highbush blueberry ‘Bluecrop’. The experiment was conducted on a commercial plantation of 11-year-old bushes that grew in a span of 2 × 1 m. Pruning had a significant effect on the number of annual shoots while there was no difference between the types of pruning. The greatest number of annual shoots were produced by plants that were pruned to an average degree. Strong and medium-pruning had a significant impact on the sum of one-year shoots compared to the control. It was found that strongly pruned shrubs produced shoots with a significantly greater total length of annual shoots than shrubs slightly pruned. No significant effect of pruning blueberries at the average length of annual shoots was marked. A significant impact on the yield of highbush blueberry was only exerted by strong pruning, although pruning performed in the middle also increased the yield. No significant difference between the medium and high pruned plants was noticed. Pruning had a significant effect on the weight of 100 fruits as compared to control and other pruning treatments.
