Abstract

The basic mechanism of the toxic effect of copper ions on plant cells is reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and oxidative stress. The first line of live cells defense against ROS is superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzymes class. Enhancement of the expression of superoxide dismutases encoding genes is one of the main mechanisms of live cell defense against oxidative stress. The aim of the paper was determination of the changes in mitochondrial manganese superoxide dismutase gene transcription level during abiotic stress for three crops: common wheat, triticale and rye. The studies showed that modification of the MnSOD gene expression is a part of response to abiotic stress caused by toxic copper ions activity in cereals. However, significant differences between analyzed species were noticed.
