Effect of selected elements of agricultural technology on the essential oil content in roots and rhizomes of common valerian (Valeriana officinalis L.)

Abstract

A three-year-long field experiment was carried out on a light silt-clay soil. The investigation was focused on the effect of plants spacing and the method of cultivation (flat and on ridges) on the essential oil content in the raw material (roots and rhizomes). From among the experimental elements investigated the most influential appeared to be the method of cultivation: flat cultivation resulted in a markedly higher content of volatile oil in roots and rhizomes in comparison with plants grown on ridges. As regards plants spacing compared, the results were not explicit with a tendency, however, of increasing volatile oil content along with closer spacing of plants. The comparison of the content of volatile oil in underground parts of common valerian shows a higher content of this active component in the roots.
