Abstract

The allelopathic effects of plants can be a factor determining the quality and durability of lawn sward. The leaves of grasses are the sources of allelopathic substances. Hence, cutting and leaving leaves on the lawn surface may lead to changes in the botanical composition of the sward. The study objective was to determine the allelopathic effects of selected varieties of Festuca ovina, Festuca rubra, Lolium perenne and Poa pratensis on the seed germination capacity of F. rubra and L. perenne. The experiment was conducted in laboratory conditions. It was found that water extracts significantly influenced the seed germination of the tested species. The influence depended on the species and variety of the donor and sensitivity of the tested plant. Extracts from P. pratensis leaves were found to be the strongest inhibitor of seed germination. Water extracts from F. ovina leaves exerted the smallest negative impact on the seed germination of L. perenne, whereas extracts from L. perenne leaves had the smallest negative impact on the seed germination of F. rubra. L. perenne demonstrated a greater sensitivity than F. rubra to allelopathic substances contained in water extracts from the lawn grass species studied.
