Biology, cultivation, nutritional value and medicinal properties of ink cap mushroom Coprinus comatus (Muller: Fries) S.F. Gray

Abstract

The ink cap mushroom Coprinus comatus is a species commonly occurring in natural sites in Europe and North America. Its carpophores are characterized by a slightly sweet taste and good flavor. They are very unstable and easily decompose, turning into a black fluid, resembling ink. The fruiting bodies of C. comatus are valued as a source of nutrients and biologically active substances. The studies showed antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antitumor activity of C. comatus, as well as its ability to lower the level of sugar, cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. This species is cultivated on commercial scale mainly in China, Korea and Taiwan. The cultivation is technologically similar to the growing of white button mushroom Agaricus bisporus.
