Abstract
ATPOL is a geobotanical grid system used in Poland in geobotanical studies since the 1970s. The present article summarizes and explains some inconsistencies raised by botanists, connected mainly with unknown geodetic principles of this grid. The original grid was analyzed mathematically and a solution was found to convert coordinates – ATPOL grid is a square grid on the conic map centered on specific point inside Poland. Detailed 2-way algorithms for unambiguous conversion between ATPOL and geographical coordinates are given with simple implementation in R. The results and the established algorithm enable a simple and certain coordinate conversion in any accuracy and implementation in any computer software.
