Abstract
The aim of present study was to determine the optimum sowing rates for the parsnip grown for seeds by the „seed to seed” method. Four sowing rates were examined: 3.0, 4.0, 6.0 and 9.0 kg·ha-1. The seeds were sown 15th May 1999 and 2000 and harvested in the middle of the July 2000 and 2001. The studied parsnip plants were characterized by the good winter hardiness. Increasing the seed rate increased the proportion of primary-umbel seed, but decreased germination energy and ability collected seeds. It was mainly affected by the lower germination energy and ability seeds obtained from other umbels. The highest weight of thousand seeds, germination energy and ability was found in the seeds from primary umbels. The highest mean yield was harvested from the plants grown from the highest seed rate, but in the season 2000/2001 from the lowest. The reason of this probably was the differences in plant density in both seasons. The highest yields, in both season, were harvested at plant density from 40 to 57 plants m-2. The thousand seed weight, germination energy and ability decreased when was more than 130 plants m-2.
