The effect of differentiated nitrogen fertilization on the yield and chosen grain quality parameters of selected spring wheat cultivars: Napola, Jasna and Kosma, growing under water deficit condition was studied. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse in 2002–2003, in Mitscherlich pots containing 6.5 kg of soil with differentiated (from the shooting phase) moisture level (40 or 60% of full water capacity). The following doses of N were applied: 0.6, 1.2, 2.4 g/pot. Plants were harvested at full ripeness. It was shown that water deficiency in soil decreased the grain yield of all varieties in comparison with the control ones (optimum water condition). In the water deficit conditions in the subsoil the best yielding variety was Kosma, independently of nitrogen fertilization. All wheat varieties reacted favourably to the increase of N rate. The grain yield, protein and gluten content increased the together with the increase of N rate applied to the soil. Water deficit favourably affected grain quality parameters of the examined varieties in comparison to objects with a higher moisture level.
