Abstract

The aim of the study was to characterize the effect of cooling duration (12 and 14 weeks at a temperature +9°C) on growth and quality of five varieties of cut flowers tulips: ‘Alma Adamkiene’, ‘Foxtrot’, ‘Freeman’, ‘Parade’ and ‘Yellow Crown’. Flower stems were harvested when petals showed color and the number of days to flowering, flower quality and their vase life were evaluated. Prolonged cooling period from 12 to 14 weeks reduced the time of forcing in the greenhouse of all tested varieties. Tulips cooled for 14 weeks produced shorter stems and tepals but characterized with longer vase life. Length of cooling did not affect the fresh weight of cut flowers. The most useful for forcing were varieties ‘Foxtrot’, ‘Freeman’ and ‘Parade’ cooled for 14 weeks. Varieties with double flowers cooled for 12 weeks had flower buds hidden between the leaves. The variety ‘Yellow Crown’ cooled for 12 weeks produced a large percentage of flowers blast, and required cooling for more than 14 weeks. In ‘Alma Adamkiene’ cut flowers were of good quality, but shoots very strongly elongated after harvesting, which reduced their decorative value.
