Effect of frequency of catches on fur characteristics evaluated in nutrias after slaughter

Abstract

The aim of the paper was to analyze the effect of different frequencies of catches  (in respect of weigh) on selected traits of fur performance in nutrias. Seventy four nutrias of standard variety constituted the experimental material and the experiment was conducted from the middle  of May to the end of October. The animals were divided into three groups (I – control, II, III). Nutrias in each group were caught and weighed at the beginning and at the end of the studies. Additionally, the animals in the second group were caught and weighed every 4 weeks, while  in the third group – every week. After the nutrias were slaughtered, five traits of their fur performance (raw pelt weight, pelt length from the tip of the nose to the furthest indentation on the back, pelt quality, the height of guard hairs and underfur as well as RDS – resilience, density and softness) were tested. The arithmetic means and the half-length of the confidence intervals were calculated for the fur characteristics in order to compare the experimental groups. Pelt weight in females, lower than that in male, was decreasing together with the increase in the frequency  of catches. The more often the nutrias were caught and weighed, the worse quality of their pelts was found. Hair coat height depended on the animal sex. The coat height in females was increasing together with the increase in the frequency of catches, whereas in males the height did not depend on the frequency of the animal weighing. On the other hand, the underfur height in both measurement points was similar in particular groups and in both sexes. Females were characterized by worse characteristics of hair coat than males. As far as the sex was concerned, the best parameters of fur performance were found in females in the first group (control) and in males in the second group (experimental) were found.
