Theme parks as part of the development of rural areas is presented in terms of their historical development, i.e. origins, traditions, recent history, and an outline of their typology depending on function and theme). The main subject of the article, however, is the planning of such parks in the context of the natural environment characteristics of a region as well as protecting and using the existing cultural resources. The author also describes the available diagnostic tools for assessing natural environment resources from the perspective of designing theme parks in rural areas. In the summary and conclusions, the author stresses that theme parks can be an effective element of the sustainable development of rural areas in the context of protecting natural and cultural resources and restoration of degraded natural areas. Therefore, the location and size of theme parks must be compatible with the existing resources. Finally, the author formulates general guidelines for the planning of theme parks.
