Abstract
Investigations were carried out at the Institute of Small Animals Breeding in Celle (German Federal Republic) within the program of Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung grant in order to determine the influence of different protein contents (12 and 17%) in the rations on the growth rate in nutria rearing. For this purpose 84 Grenland nutria of both sexes were fed ad libitum with the tested mixtures. The animals were marked individually at birth. They were reared in separate pens for males and females. Each animal was weighed at 2 and 4-week intervals and the amounts of feed used were calculated. At the same time the young were fed exclusively on full ration feed containing 12% and 17% of crude protein. The study calculated the daily use of protein and metabolic energy in rearing as well as the mean weight of the animals’ bodies.
Increasing the level of protein in full ration feed improved the increase of the body weight of Greenland nutria. Feeding of young coypu which were with their mothers with 17% of protein in the diet resulted in their higher body weight after weaning.
