The aim of the studies was to analyse the purchase prices of hog and cattle livestock in Poland between 2005 and 2012. The official data of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development were used as the experimental material. The purchase prices of the analysed livestock fit for slaughter were characterized by significant differentiation. As far as the slaughter pigs are concerned, the purchase prices per 1 kg of live weight ranged from 3.15 to 6.08 zlotys; however, in the case of beef cattle the prices were between 3.70 and 6.70 zlotys. The largest differentiation was noticed in 2012. The difference between the lowest and the highest price amounted to 2.9% for pig livestock and even 12.8% for cattle livestock. Large differences between the purchase prices of livestock fit for slaughter can prove that the cattle and pig production is unpredictable. When it comes to pig livestock, the relation between the purchase price of pork and the period of the calendar year was proved since farmers received the lowest prices for pig livestock in autumn and winter, while the highest prices were found in spring and summer, compared to the other seasons. Considering the purchase prices of livestock fit for slaughter in each year, it was noticeable that the prices showed a changeable tendency to decline and increase. On the other hand, a significant increase in the prices was found over 8 years. The prices amounted to 3.5 zlotys at the beginning of the analysis, and 5.5 zlotys per 1 kg of live weight for pigs and over 6 zlotys per 1 kg of live weight for cattle in the last year of the studies.
