Abstract

The aim of the study was to find out the opinions of the inhabitants of Lublin on the causes and scale of wasting food. Food wasting has negative economic, social and environmental consequences. In the world, approx. 30% of produced food is wasted in both poor and developed countries every year. This problem also applies to Poland, where every year approx. 9 million tons of food are thrown away at all stages of the food chain, i.e. production, distribution and consump- tion. Results of the authors’ own research show that 67% of the inhabitants of Lublin admit to wasting food. Dairy products, meat and meat products, fruit, vegetables and bread are most fre- quently thrown away. According to the respondents, hunger and malnutrition, as well high costs associated with waste disposal are the most important factors that may have an effect on reducing the scale of food waste.
