Spent mushroom substrate (SMS) is a valuable fertilizer that improves soil fertility. The high level of organic matter and biological safety justify the use of the substrate in agricultural and horticultural crops. The SMS has a positive effect on the yield of plants. The development of the SMS in plant production contributes to reducing the amount of unnecessary post-production materials. A limitation of the universal use of SMS to the cultivation is the high variability of the chemical composition. The amount and term of fertilization with the spent mushroom compost to the cultivation should be adjusted to the soil’s nutrient content. This article reviews recent research into the use of SMS in to horticultural production.
