Abstract

Sulphur mining, even with the use of such ecological methods as melting sulphur in orogen, has negative effects on the environment in the area of the mine and its surroundings. The aim of this study was to determine how the sulphur mine affects soil environment properties in the area of the mine and its surroundings. Soil properties deteriorated in areas where sulphur affected it directly. The lack of plant life in this area proves that biological life was completely destroyed in the soil. Sulphur mine activity as well as sulphur dust stored in waste-heaps caused an increase in the content of sulphur, both general and sulphate forms, in the soils around. Sulphur dust was carried by wind and rain, which affected the areas surrounding the mine. Indirect effects of sulphur dust were proved by acid reaction of soils that were in agricultural use.
