The paper is in the form of a review. The aim of the article is to present the history and historic techniques of growing plants of the genus Citrus L. Europe, including Poland. The research methodology was based on the analysis of archival materials, including historical treatises in the field of horticulture and agriculture. They include dissertations written in the 16th-18th centuries by such authors as: G. B. Ferrari, J. Commelin, J. van der Goen, J. Ch. Volkamer, J. S. Elsholtz, W. Sierakowski, A. P. Jabłonowska and J. K. Kluk. The early modern history of the European cultivation of citrus plants, as well as described in the treatises methods of their cultivation and overwintering, including cultivation techniques in the ground and in containers has been described. The types of wooden and brick conservatories erected for this purpose and containers used for cultivation were also taken into account.
