The review paper is based on scientific, popular and scientific publications and articles from specialist journals, which refer to the cultivation of winter rye in Poland and in Europe. The paper largely confirms the existing views. However, the innovative holistic view on the theme of winter rye allowed the author to obtain new conclusions. The reduction of this species in the crop area is a global phenomenon. Rye grain is a component for the production of valuable bread. Its low habitat requirements allow it to survive the inclement weather conditions of winter, sites on weaker soils and also water shortages. An unfavorable limiting factor for rye cultivation is unstable situation on the cereals market. The future of winter rye in Poland is related to the search for more efficient varieties and increased consumption of rye bread.
