Abstract

The research was carried out in 2006. The leaves of Brugmansia genus and thorn-apple ‘Indianka’ were collected for chemical estimation from a field experiment in which their decorative qualities were evaluated. The objects of research were 6 different plants of Brugmansia genus and thorn-apple. The ornamental plants of Brugmansia investigated in the study were considerably different in the evaluated chemical components content. The most significant content of total phenolic acids (mean 0.11%) and tropane alkaloids on hyoscyamine (mean 0.18%) was marked in air dried leaves of plants of ‘D’ object – with yellow and full-bloomed flowers. A relatively high content of tannins was found in the leaves of ‘F’ object – very big yellow flowers (mean 4.5%), ‘E’ object – very big pink flowers (mean 4.4%) and ‘C’ – white full-bloomed flowers (mean 4.3%). The leaves of thorn-apple ‘Indianka’ were proved to be much richer in total phenolic acids (mean 0.15%), tannins (mean 5.3%) and tropane alkaloids on hyoscyamine (mean 0.29%). A slightly higher content of the aforementioned chemical components was marked in the leaves of plants of Brugmansia genus and Datura innoxia harvested in the 3rd 10-day period of September than in the 3rd 10-day period of August. Because of the presence of tropane alkaloids in the plants of Brugmansia genus it is important to expose these plants in gardens, on terraces and in public places carefully.
