WIS 2-1A elements were the first retrotransposons identified in a High Molecular Weight glutenin subunit (HMW-GS) of wheat. WIS 2-1A belong to the Ty-1 copia family. They occur in very different copy numbers, ranging from tens of thousands to just a few copies per genome. The copy number of WIS 2-1A was estimated to be about 200 per haploid genome in Triticum aestivum L. They are characterized by great diversity, while most of the sequences of those retrotransposons are inactive. The results obtained and presented in this study confirm the presence of WIS 2-1A retrotransposons in the genome of common wheat (Triticum aestivum L). In this study, the integrase gene for WIS 2-1A occupying locus X63184.1 was used. This gene was identified in 15 from among 26 cultivars of common wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). The literature indicates that the presence of mobile elements can affect modifications of glutenins loci. Thereupon, it seems that analyzing WIS 2-1A in common wheat may be helpful to predict gluten quality.
