Abstract

The effect of water extracts from common shepherd’s purse (Capsella bursa-pastoris (L.) Medik.) on selected physiological processes lettuce seeds (Lactuca sativa L. cv ‘Maryna’) was examined. Different concentrations (1%, 2%, 3% and 5%) of roots and shoots of the common shepherd’s purse were used to estimate the germination rate and the seedling weight of lettuce. It was found that the germination rate of lettuce seeds was lowered with an increasing extract concentration using both roots and shoots extracts. The values of the fresh weight of lettuce seedlings were the highest for seedlings grown on water substrates with 1% extracts of shepherd’s purse, not in control conditions, and the lowest grown on 5% extract. There was a larger increase in the fresh weight of lettuce seedlings, watered with extracts from shoots shepherd’s purse, compared to the mass of seedlings watered with extracts from the roots of this plant. The change in the percentage of water content of lettuce seedlings is not statistically significant in both parts of the experiment as compared to the control.
