Abstract

Considering sulfur shortages in Polish soils, there is a necessity of supplying this nutrient by foliar fertilization of plants. In the paper results of a two years’ pot experiment are presented where two ways of oilseed rape fertilization with sulfur were used: to soil and foliar fertilization during the budding stage with MgSO4 · 7 H2O against the background of control object without S in the nutrient solution. It was found that plants deprived S inhibited the growth and development and did not produce any seeds as well as containing excessive concentration of most of nutrients. Sulfur used as foliar application was absorbed by oilseed rape leaves and as a consequence plant metabolism was changed, which led to growth and plant development processes and a decrease of excessive concentration of nutrients. As a result, plants originating from this object produced siliques filled with seeds and gave a 70% yield in comparison to plants fertilized with sulfur to soil.
