In a four-year-long field experiment (1999–2003) located on sandy soil the effects of increasing doses of magnesium fertilizers and foliar fertilization with Mikrosol U on plant population, diseases infestation and quality parameters of American ginseng (Panax quinquefolium L.) roots were studied. In the experiment, three increasing doses of magnesium fertilizers: 0 kg Mg · ha-1 (control object), 30 kg Mg · ha-1 i 60 kg Mg · ha-1 in a form of magnesium sulphate were applied. Additionally, during intensive growth plants were sprayed with foliar fertilizer Mikrosol U (1% solution) in 10-days intervals. Magnesium fertilization positively influenced plant population and quality parameters of ginseng roots as well as decreasing disease infestation in four following years of vegetation. That was extremely visible in the third and fourth years of vegetation; moreover, 60 kg Mg · ha-1 gave the best effect. At the same time, foliar fertilization with Mikrosol U favorably affects healthiness of plants, leading to higher plants population and improving quality parameters of roots.
