Wild species of Nicotiana are the source of resistance to many diseases and pests of tobacco. N. africana is the donor of genetic resistance to Potato virus Y. Interspecific hybridization N. tabacum × N. africana, in vitro regeneration of F1 hybrids, cytological analysis of subsequent hybrid generations as well as biological immunoassays allowed to obtain BPA breeding lines tolerant to all PVY isolates. N. alata is the source of resistance to Tomato spotted wilt virus. The RTSW-al gene transfer from N. alata to the tobacco genome was performed by crossing, androgenesis and selection of resistance genes using SCAR markers. These breeding works allowed to obtain lines resistant to TSWV. The studies on N. debneyi led to the development of cytoplasmic male sterile varieties VRG1, VRG2, VRG4, HTR2, HTR3 resistant to black root rot. Using this type of resistance three-way cross hybrids VRG5TL, VRG10TL resistant to Thielaviopsis basicola were obtained for the first time in the world. In addition, the transfer of resistance to black root rot from N. glauca to cultivar Wiślica was made and a new cultivar Wigola was produced.
