The cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) phenomenon in plants is the result of pollen development abortion. The abortion is usually due to incompatibility of nuclear and mitochondrial genomes interactions. Many models are pretending to explain CMS. However, molecular mechanisms of pollen sterility preservation, as well as its restoration in case of many species, are not well known, despite that breeding programs resulted in the evaluation of effective CMS systems, i.e. in cereals. The interest in hybrid breeding results from the opportunity of heterosis exploitation and to the efficient way of control over breeding materials. It is evident that hybrid breeding has, and would also have in the future, a crucial status in breeding companies due to economic reasons.
