The aim of the study was to analyse selected functions of forests and forest management in Poland against the background of European Union countries. The study used Perkal’s multivariate method. The possibilities for forests and forest management to fulfil specific functions were made on the basis of selected diagnostic features. The data sources were the studies of the Central Statistical Office and the European Forest Assessment. The method used showed significant differentiation of forest functions in the European Union countries. The countries with the best multifunctional forest management included Finland, Germany and Sweden. The situation is less favourable in Belgium, Denmark, Ireland and Portugal. Poland, in comparison with the European Union countries, is characterised by very good management of stands based on the idea of a multifunctional forest.
