Abstract

The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of the applied substrates and cultivation methods on the yield of sweet basil Ocimum basilicium L. The assessed substrates were: substrate for seedling production, substrate for seedling production enriched with coconut fiber, high peat, high peat enriched with Osmocote, and sandy soil (control). The evaluated cultivation methods included sowing seeds directly into the pots (6, 8 or 10 seeds per pot), thinning the seedlings and transplanting them into pots (3, 4 or 5 seedlings per pot), and planting larger seedlings into pots (1, 2 or 3 seedlings per pot). Then, the effects of individual substrates and cultivation methods on the yield and content of selected elements in basil herb were determined. The best generating plants were grown in high peat enriched with Osmocote. The largest share of leaves in the herb yield was found in the cultivation on sandy soil. The largest yield of a single pot was in the culti-vation of pricking out the seedlings. On the other hand, in the cultivation of sowing seeds directly into pots plants were the most leafy. In addition, with the increase in the number of plants in one pot the yield was increased and simultaneously the share of leaves in the herb mass was de-creased.
