Abstract

The study was conducted in the years 2010 and 2012 to determine the effect of cultivar on the growth, yield and chemical composition of the raw material of Pot marigold. The object of the study were 3 cultivars of marigold plants: ‘Pacific Persimon Beauty’, ‘Radio Brzoskwiniowy’ and ‘Santana Słomkowożółty’, differing in colour intensity of flowers. The studied cultivars were characterized by significant differences in terms of the average plant height and the diameter of the inflorescence and the comparable yield of raw material. The average yield of fresh and dry weight of flower heads was respectively 9.7 and 1.6 kg · 100 m–2. The studies found diverse participation of full inflorescence in their total number, which was the most beneficial in the cultivar with yellow flowers (‘Santana Słomkowożółty’). The studied marigold plants accumulated on average 2.03 g of total carotenoids per 100 g air-dried weight of inflorescences. The β-carotene participation in total carotenoids was on average 61.3%. The most total carotenoids and β-carotene was found in 100 g of ‘Radio Brzoskwiniowy’ raw material (respectively, 2.29 and 2.00 g). The flavonoids content in the studied raw material was from 0.10 to 0.36%, depending on the cultivar.
