Abstract

Shrubs are low, perennial plants with woody shoots, usually reaching 50–60 cm in height, which often spread out, forming dense turf. Among the better known and more commonly used forest shrubs are plants of the genus Vaccinium L. Ericaceae (Juss.). The genus Vaccinium (blueberry) comprises 36 subspecies and approximately
450 species worldwide. Blueberries have high nutritional and health-promoting properties. They supplement the diet with vitamins and minerals, are a source of organic acids that improve digestive processes, and contain antioxidants that are valuable for health. The fruits and leaves of Vaccinium plants are widely used in traditional medicine and have their place in modern phytotherapy. They are used in fresh and processed form as aids to digestion and immunity, and as powerful antioxidants with anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory and cardiovascular protective properties. The Vaccinium genus deserves wider promotion and further pharmacological and phytochemical research.
