The effect of Methylobacterium symbioticum on the quantity and marketable quality of potato yield

Abstract

In two-year field studies, the effect of the microbiological preparation Blue N applied foliar on the marketable yield, structure and tubers defects was determined. The microbiological preparation contained Methylobacterium
symbioticum bacteria with properties of nitrogen fixation from the air. The experimental factors were: cultivar (Hermes, Tajfun), preparation (control object – without the use of microbiological preparation, object with the Blue N preparation), dose of mineral nitrogen (basic – 100 kg N·ha–1, reduced by 30% – 70 kg N·ha–1). The studies assessed the level of marketable tuber yield, share of tuber fractions and external defects of tubers (deformations, greening, infection with common scab). On the object after the application of the microbiological preparation, the marketable tuber yield was higher by 8.1% compared to the control object. The use of preparation contributed to a significant increase of large tubers and decrease infection with common scab in compared to the control object. The studies showed that the use of the Blue N microbiological preparation made it possible to reduce the dose of mineral nitrogen.
