Abstract
The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of nitrogen and sulphur fertilization on the seed yield, oil content, and fatty acid composition of calendula. The experiment was set up as a split-block design with two factors: the first factor was the nitrogen dose: 0, 30, 60, 90 and 120 kg N·ha–1, and the second was the sulphur dose: 0, 30 kg S·ha–1. The best effects of the nitrogen fertilization on productivity were achieved with the doses in the range of 60–90 kg N·ha–1. Sulphur showed a favourable effect on the seed yield and fat content (effectiveness of sulphur increased along with the increasing nitrogen fertilization). Nitrogen fertilization modified the fatty acid composition, causing an increase in the percentage of linolenic acids and a reduction of oleic acid contents in oils. Sulphur did not affect the quality of fat. However, this feature was markedly influenced by meteorological conditions prevailing during growth and ripening of plants.
