Abstract
The aim of the study was to evaluate the fattening suitability indices and slaughter value of 53 commercial heifers (PHB B-W × Limousine) fed semi-intensively. The results obtained in regard to daily gain, slaughter age, slaughter weight, hot carcass weight and dressing percentage, and carcass conformation and fatness according to EUROP scale were analysed in relation to housing system, limousine breed gene share, birth weight and post-fattening weight. It was found that heifers with 75% Limousine gene percentage achieved the highest slaughter weight and carcass weight, as well as the best conformation and highest fatness. Higher warm carcass weights and better conformation were characteristic of heifers kept untethered. On the other hand, the carcasses of heifers kept loose were significantly (P ≤ 0.05) more fatty (11.53 points, class 4–) compared to animals kept tethered (10.32 points, class 4), as well as obtaining a significantly (P ≤ 0.05) higher dressing percentage (61.2% vs. 60.2%). Heifers with higher birth weights were found to obtain significantly (P ≤ 0.05) higher slaughter weights.
