Abstract

The influence of water extracts from winter wheat straw on the germination capacity and energy as well as the growth of seedlings of Triticum aestivum L.(Turnia and Olivin variety) and Triticum spelta L. (Schwabenkorn and Spelt I.N.Z. variety) were evaluated in the study. The extracts were prepared using 2, 4 and 8 g of dried straw per 100 ml of distilled water. The seeds were sown to Petri dishes and watered with an appropriate extract every day. Dishes wetted only with distilled water were the control objects. Germination energy and capacity of the examined varieties decreased along with the increase of the concentration of water extracts from winter wheat straw. Higher concentrations of water extracts reduced to a significantly larger extent the growth of seedling roots while the extract prepared from 2 g of straw per 100 ml distilled water significantly stimulated the growth of the first leaf. Taking into account the germination energy and capacity of the tested varieties the most sensitive to water extracts from winter wheat straw was Triticum spelta L. Spelt I.N.Z. variety.
